Geoff Moore Biography
Who is Geoff Moore?
Geoff Moore is a Dove Award-winning Christian singer and songwriter whose career spans over 4 decades, remaining known for his distinctive rock-pop style. Born in Michigan on February 22, 1961, he first began singing while attending Taylor University, stepping in as lead vocalist for his roommate’s band. After graduating, Geoff and his wife moved to Nashville with little more than a demo tape produced by a childhood friend and a deep passion to pursue music.
In 1983, while working at a clothing store in Nashville, Geoff met Michael W. Smith, who played keyboards on a demo produced by Billy Smiley. This connection led to a publishing deal with Paragon Music and opportunities to record demo vocals, which helped launch his professional music career.
Geoff released three solo albums on the Power Discs label in the mid-1980s: Where Are the Other Nine? (1984), Over the Edge (1986), and The Distance (1987). After signing with Sparrow Records in 1987, he formed the band Geoff Moore and The Distance, which became his main touring and recording group for over a decade.
Together, Geoff Moore and The Distance released multiple albums, including A Place to Stand (1988, Sparrow), Foundations (1989, Sparrow), Pure and Simple (1990, ForeFront), A Friend Like U (1992, ForeFront), Evolution (1993, ForeFront), Home Run (1995, ForeFront), and Threads (1997, ForeFront/Chordant). Distribution of some later albums was handled by Chordant. The band scored No. 1 Christian radio hits like “Home Run” and “A Friend Like U” and received four Grammy nominations for Best Rock Gospel Album, though they did not win. Moore also earned Dove Awards, including Song of the Year for “The Great Adventure” with Steven Curtis Chapman in 1993.
Following the disbandment of The Distance, Geoff resumed his solo career, continuing to release music and perform. In 2016, he released the 10-track album The Next Thing on Right Angle Music, bringing his total to 25 albums and compilations across solo and band projects.
In 2014, Geoff founded Fellowship Adventures, a ministry providing outdoor hunting and adventure trips designed to foster fellowship, spiritual growth, and appreciation of God’s creation.
Geoff and his wife, married for over 32 years, have two sons and two adopted daughters from China. He emphasizes that his faith is an active, daily relationship with God, expressed through prayer, scripture, stillness, and listening for God’s guidance in life and ministry.
Geoff Moore’s career reflects his commitment to authentic Christian music and living out his faith. His enduring influence continues to inspire audiences through music and ministry rooted in purpose and grace.
