Melanie Penn Biography

Melanie Penn, born on May 6, 1980, is an American singer-songwriter known for her contributions to the Christian music scene. Raised in Falls Church, Virginia, she developed a passion for music early on, participating in church services and performing in operettas. Her early musical endeavors included classical voice training and aspirations toward an opera career.

After moving to New York City around 2000 to pursue musical theater, Melanie's life took a profound turn following the 9/11 attacks, which she witnessed from her East Village apartment. This event led her to attend Redeemer Presbyterian Church, where she became a worship leader under Pastor Tim Keller. Melanie's career in musical theater included touring with the Broadway national company of "Grease" and performing in various New York City productions.

Transitioning to songwriting, Melanie collaborated with Nashville-based producer Ben Shive and released her debut album, "Wake Up Love," in 2010. This was followed by "Hope Tonight" in 2014, and her Christmas concept album "Immanuel" in 2017, which received significant acclaim. She continued to build her discography with "Immanuel: The Folk Sessions" in 2019, "More Alive Vol. 1" in 2020, and "More Alive Vol. 2" in 2022.

Having recently relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, Melanie plans to continue writing and releasing new Christian music that blends her unique faith-infused style with indie pop, folk rock, and alternative country.
