Robbie Seay Band Biography
Who is Robbie Seay Band?
Robbie Seay Band (RSB), formed in Houston, Texas in 1997, is a Christian rock and worship band led by Robbie Seay. Robbie grew up in Texas in a family deeply rooted in church ministry, with several pastors among his relatives. In his senior year of high school, his older brother Chris Seay, then a student at Baylor University, became pastor at Waco’s University Baptist Church and invited Robbie to join the church’s music ministry. There, Robbie became part of the same worship community as David Crowder, who would go on to become one of Christian music’s most recognized artists, and began shaping his calling in worship music that speaks to issues of faith in contemporary life.
After graduating from Baylor University, Robbie moved to Houston, where Chris had become a teaching pastor at Ecclesia, a church in the Montrose neighborhood described by its founders as "a holistic missional Christian community," which included a coffeehouse, a recording studio, an outreach center for the homeless, and a space for worship services. It was there that Robbie Seay Band took shape in 1997, with Robbie Seay on lead vocals and guitar, Dan Hamilton on drums, and Seth Woods on bass, later joined by Taylor Johnson on guitar. The band built its following organically, leading worship at Ecclesia's Sunday services and at the church's coffeehouse, while releasing a series of independent albums beginning with their self-titled EP (1997) and the full-length "Thoughts of You" (1999).
Years of independent releases, including "10,000 Charms" (2001), "Live" (2003), and "Better Days" (2004), along with touring throughout the Southwest, earned the band a deal with Sparrow Records, which re-released "Better Days" in 2005. Their 2007 Sparrow album "Give Yourself Away" brought their widest audience yet, driven by the single "Song of Hope (Heaven Come Down)," which reached No. 7 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart and received widespread airplay on Christian radio.
The band continued recording with "Miracle" (2010), which reached the lower region of the Billboard 200, and the independent release "Rich & Poor" (2011). Beginning in 2013, RSB released an ambitious series of EPs adapting passages from the Book of Psalms, the first of which was funded in part through a crowdfunding campaign and offered as a free download. Two more volumes followed in 2014, and the three were later compiled into the full-length "Psalms" album in 2015.
Robbie Seay has since stepped into a leadership role with The Worship Initiative in Dallas, Texas, serving as Executive Vice President of Leader Development and Content. In this capacity, he partners with longtime friends Shane & Shane to mentor and equip the next generation of worship leaders through resources, training, and collaborative projects. He has continued songwriting and recording, contributing to TWI's "Psalms from the Well" project and featuring on numerous TWI releases in the 2020s, including hymns, live recordings, and originals such as "God With Us," "Christus Victor (Amen)," and "All Creatures of Our God and King," often alongside Dinah Wright and other collaborators.
The Robbie Seay Band catalog saw a best-of compilation, "O Great Love (A Best of Collection)," in 2019, and the band has occasionally performed live events while Robbie maintains an active presence leading worship and creating new content for the church.
