This is the Book of 1 Thessalonians.

First Thessalonians is a warm and encouraging letter from the apostle Paul to a young church in Thessalonica. Paul and Silas had preached the good news about Jesus there, but opposition became so intense that they had to leave sooner than they wanted. Later, Paul sent Timothy to check on the believers and was relieved to hear that their faith, love, and hope remained strong.

The central theme of 1 Thessalonians is hope in Christ's return. Paul celebrates the Thessalonians' faithfulness under pressure and encourages them to keep growing in holiness, love, and confidence in Jesus.

Paul begins by thanking God for the Thessalonians. Their faith led to action, their love produced hard work, and their hope in Jesus gave them endurance. They had turned away from idols to serve the living God, and their changed lives became an example to believers in other places.

Paul then reminds them what kind of ministry they had seen from him. He had not come to trick, flatter, or use them. Like a caring mother and a loving father, Paul served them with tenderness, honesty, and hard work. His goal was not personal gain, but to help them live lives worthy of God.

Because Paul had been forced to leave, he was anxious about their faith under persecution. But Timothy's report brought him joy. The Thessalonians were still standing firm, still loving one another, and still longing to see Paul again. Paul prays that their love would keep growing and that God would strengthen them in holiness.

Paul then gives practical instruction. God's people are called to sexual integrity, self-control, love for one another, honest work, and generosity toward those in need. Their way of life should reflect their allegiance to Jesus, even in a culture that may misunderstand or oppose them.

The letter also addresses grief and confusion about believers in the church who had died before Jesus returned. Paul does not want them to grieve without hope. Because Jesus died and rose again, those believers have not missed out. When Jesus returns, the dead in Christ will be raised, the living will be gathered with them, and all who belong to Jesus will be with the Lord forever.

Paul closes by urging the church to stay awake and ready. The Day of the Lord, the day of Jesus' future return, will come unexpectedly, but believers are not to live in fear or darkness. They belong to the light, so they should stay awake, alert, and ready. Paul then urges them to encourage one another, respect their leaders, be patient with the weak, rejoice, pray, give thanks, and hold on to what is good.
