This is the Book of 2 Timothy.

Second Timothy is Paul's final and most personal letter. He writes from prison to his younger coworker Timothy, who still appears to be serving in Ephesus. Paul's trial is not going well, and he knows his death may be near. So he writes to encourage Timothy to remain faithful, endure suffering, confront false teaching, and continue the mission entrusted to him.

The central theme of 2 Timothy is finishing the race with faithfulness. Paul knows that following Jesus can bring hardship, shame, and sacrifice, but he urges Timothy not to shrink back in fear. Timothy must rely on God's strength, hold firmly to the truth, and pass the message of Jesus on to others who will faithfully teach it.

Paul begins by thanking God for Timothy and remembering his sincere faith, a faith first lived out by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. Paul urges Timothy to rekindle the gift God has given him and not to be ashamed of the testimony about Jesus or of Paul, who is suffering in prison. God has not given His people a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

Paul then points Timothy to Jesus, who defeated death and brought life through the gospel. Paul is suffering because of this message, but he is not ashamed, because he knows the One he has trusted. Timothy must guard the good deposit, the message of truth entrusted to him, through the help of the Holy Spirit.

Paul uses several pictures to describe faithful ministry. Timothy is to be like a soldier who stays focused, an athlete who competes according to the rules, and a farmer who works patiently for the harvest. Following Jesus is not easy or instant. It requires endurance, discipline, and trust that God will bring fruit in His time.

At the heart of the letter, Paul tells Timothy to remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead and descended from David. Even though Paul is chained like a criminal, God's word is not chained. The message of Jesus continues to spread, and those who belong to Christ are called to endure with Him.

Paul also warns Timothy about corrupt teachers whose message is spreading harm in the church. They were teaching that the resurrection of believers had already happened, turning Christian hope into a private, spiritualized experience instead of the future hope of bodily resurrection and new creation. Timothy must avoid foolish arguments and raise up faithful people who will teach the real good news about Jesus.

In one of the letter's most important passages, Paul reminds Timothy that Scripture is breathed out by God and useful for teaching, correction, and training in righteousness. In difficult times, Timothy must continue in what he has learned, because God's word gives wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Jesus and equips God's people for every good work.

Paul closes with a solemn charge. Timothy must preach the word, remain steady, endure hardship, and fulfill his ministry. Paul knows his own life is nearing its end. He says he has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Now he looks forward to the crown of righteousness that the Lord will give to all who long for His appearing.

Second Timothy ends with personal requests, warnings, and greetings. Many have abandoned Paul, but the Lord has stood by him and will bring him safely into His Kingdom. In a world of suffering, opposition, and spiritual confusion, followers of Jesus are called to remain faithful to the end, trusting that the risen Lord is present with them even in the darkest moments.
