This is Romans Part 1, covering chapters 1 through 4.

Romans is Paul's fullest explanation of the good news about Jesus. Writing to a divided church of Jewish and Gentile believers in Rome, Paul explains how the gospel displays God's righteousness and creates one new covenant family in Christ.

The central theme of this section is that all humanity is trapped in sin, but God makes people right with Himself through faith in Jesus. No one is justified by moral achievement, religious identity, or works of the Law. Salvation comes through God's grace, because of what Jesus has done.

Paul begins by announcing that the gospel is God's power to save all who trust in Jesus. God's righteousness means that He is just, good, and faithful to His promises. Through Jesus' death and resurrection, God demonstrates both His justice toward sin and His mercy toward sinners.

Paul then explains the human problem. The nations have rejected the Creator and turned to idols, giving ultimate allegiance to created things instead of God. This distorts human hearts and leads to destructive behavior. But Israel, though given God's Law, is also guilty. Having the Torah does not make someone righteous if they do not live faithfully before God. Paul concludes that both Jews and Gentiles stand guilty before a righteous God.

But guilt is not the final word. Jesus came as Israel's Messiah to die on behalf of all people as a sacrifice for sins. Through His death and resurrection, God deals justly with human evil, offers forgiveness, and justifies those who trust in Jesus.

Justification means that God freely declares a person to be in the right because of what Jesus has done. Instead of standing guilty, those who trust in Jesus are forgiven, welcomed into God's covenant family, and given a new future shaped by His grace.

Paul then turns to Abraham to show that this has always been God's way. Long before circumcision or the Law of Moses, Abraham was counted righteous because he trusted God's promise. God promised Abraham a family through whom all nations would be blessed, and Paul says that promise is fulfilled in Jesus.

Romans Part 1 ends with Abraham as the father of God's multi-ethnic covenant family. This family is made up of Jews and Gentiles who share the same faith in Jesus the Messiah, the One who fulfills God's promises and brings His rescue to the world.
