This is the Book of Nahum.

Nahum announces God's judgment against Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire. More than a century after Nineveh repented during Jonah's time, the Assyrian Empire was once again marked by violence, cruelty, and oppression, becoming one of Israel's greatest enemies.

The central theme of Nahum is that God is slow to anger, but He will not leave evil unpunished. Though He patiently endures human rebellion, His justice will ultimately bring down every arrogant and oppressive power.

Through vivid, poetic imagery, Nahum describes Nineveh's coming downfall. The Assyrian Empire had conquered nations through brutality and terror, yet the very city that once seemed invincible would itself be overthrown. For God's people, this was good news, because their suffering under oppression would not last forever.

Yet Nahum's message reaches beyond Assyria. Nineveh becomes an example of every violent empire that exalts itself against God. Throughout history, kingdoms built on pride, injustice, and the suffering of the innocent will ultimately face God's righteous judgment.

The book closes by reminding us that the Lord is good and a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who take refuge in Him, and His judgment against evil is an expression of His love for the innocent and the oppressed.

Nahum reminds us that evil never has the final word. Though injustice may seem to triumph for a season, God remains faithful to defend those who trust in Him and, in His perfect timing, will bring down every power that stands against His righteousness.
