All Star United Biography

All Star United is a Christian rock band formed by frontman Ian Eskelin, drummer Christian Crowe, guitarist Brian Whitman, keyboardist Patrick McCallum, bassist Gary Miller. Shortly after their inception, Miller was replaced by Adrian Walther, and guitarist Dave Clo was added to the lineup. Their musical style combines elements of alternative rock and Britpop, anchored by melodically powerful faith-based lyrics.

The first ASU incarnation came together in 1996 when founding member Ian Eskelin decided to broaden his solo act and take a group of friends on the road. Heady days ensued. The band was signed to a major record label, and after scoring five No. 1 singles, their American youth group following blossomed into a legion of devoted fans. During a rare yearlong break from touring in 2000, Ian took time to court and marry his new bride, Peggy. The couple resided in Nashville, Tennessee, as did the newest members of the ASU lineup.

Over their first six years, All Star United released their self-titled, critically acclaimed debut album in 1997, followed by "International Anthems for the Human Race" in 1998, and "Smash Hits." They toured globally, performing at some of the world's most renowned venues and festivals, with record companies and fans eagerly awaiting their shows. What came next? The long-awaited 2002 studio recording, "Revolution," promised to live up to its title, inviting ASU fans, both new and old, along for the ride.

Brothers Matt and Mike Payne, originally from Rockford, Illinois, joined Ian on drums and guitar, respectively, and Jeremy Hunter, a Seattle native, became the bassist and recording engineer for "Revolution." While the four-piece ASU team worked on the new album, they also rethought the band's platform. Ian aimed to communicate something more personal. "I've written all kinds of songs, but what I really love and get most excited about is expressing my faith in new and creative ways in just three minutes. That, for me, is an outpouring of my faith and my calling."

Ian's skillful use of metaphor, imagery, and twisted clichés could charm a literature student for hours. His songwriting prowess is evident throughout the new record, particularly in songs like the Lennonesque "We Are The Future" and the title track "Revolution." While "Sweet Jesus" and the worshipful "Making It Beautiful" may be more overt in their spiritual message, the common thread among all tracks is Ian's thought-provoking challenge, which he claims has never been more relevant. "There are several songs on this new record that discuss change, the idea that we can improve our lives by helping to better the world. Each of us, individually through Christ, can make small differences. I feel these songs are more pertinent now than ever, regardless of the circumstances of the day."

"Revolution" took two-and-a-half years to write and reflects an artist honing his craft while personally living through themes of exploration, change, discovery, and challenge. Ian remained heavily involved in production, and longtime friend Mark Freegard (known for his work with Manic Street Preachers, Del Amitri, and The Breeders) mixed both "Revolution" and ASU's self-titled debut album. Ian is proud of the result. "It's a ten-song record, and I really worked hard to keep it concise. I wanted the album to deliver a strong message and for every song to be enjoyable for listeners. The guys are incredibly talented musicians who brought a fresh perspective to these songs."

Since the release of "Revolution," All Star United has continued to evolve and produce new music. They released "Love and Radiation" in 2006 and "The Good Album" in 2009, each showcasing the band's ability to adapt and innovate while staying true to their core message and rock roots. The band's lineup has also evolved, with Matt Payne, Mike Payne, and Jeremy Hunter becoming integral members alongside Ian Eskelin.

Musically, the band has promised to emphasize solid rock 'n' roll fundamentals without losing the fun elements that fans love. "Performing the songs from 'Revolution' with the same excitement as when we first started has been easy. The new material is heartfelt, and I'm incredibly passionate about it. I want the music to be as meaningful to listeners as it is to me. Whether in a car, living room, or concert hall, I want people to leave an ASU experience feeling reflective, energized, and uplifted." All Star United has maintained a strong international presence, touring extensively and engaging fans with dynamic performances and music that explores themes of hope, transformation, and faith.

Beyond All Star United, bandleader Eskelin has released three solo projects and is actively involved in writing and producing for other artists. In 2008, his production skills earned him a Dove Award for "Producer of the Year," with another nomination following in 2009. Read more on Last.fm.
