Chris Tomlin Biography

Who is Chris Tomlin?

Chris Tomlin is a highly influential Christian worship leader, singer and songwriter whose music has shaped contemporary worship worldwide. He was born May 4, 1972, in Grand Saline, Texas.

Tomlin gained widespread recognition through his involvement as a worship leader with Louie Giglio's Passion movement beginning in the late 1990s. He appeared alongside worship leaders and artists including Matt Redman, Charlie Hall, Christy Nockels, Kristian Stanfill and the David Crowder Band, whose lead singer later began performing as the solo artist Crowder. Tomlin signed with sixstepsrecords and Sparrow Records and began releasing a series of worship albums that produced some of the most widely sung songs in modern Christian music.

In 2008, Tomlin moved from Texas to Atlanta to help launch Giglio's Passion City Church, which held its first service in February 2009. He continued recording, touring and participating in Passion events while helping introduce a new generation to modern worship music.

Tomlin's 2013 album Burning Lights debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making it only the fourth Christian album to top the all-genre chart. The album included "Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies)."

Throughout his career, Tomlin has recorded many of contemporary Christian music's best-known worship songs, including "How Great Is Our God," "Holy Is the Lord," "Our God," "Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies)," "At the Cross (Love Ran Red)," "Good Good Father," "Nobody Loves Me Like You" and "Holy Forever."

In 2025, Tomlin released his 18th album, The King Is Still the King. It delivered the largest global streaming week of his more than 25-year career and peaked at No. 8 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart.

Tomlin has sold more than 12 million albums and earned more than 8 billion global streams. He has won a Grammy Award, three Billboard Music Awards and 30 GMA Dove Awards. His Grammy was awarded for And If Our God Is for Us..., and several of his later albums and songs have also received Grammy nominations.
