Collington Biography

Who is Collington?

Collington is an indie rock, Christian rock, and worship band fronted by American singer-songwriter James Collington. Blending acoustic songwriting with alternative rock and worship influences, the band's music ranges from intimate, stripped-down arrangements to energetic rock productions. Since its debut, Collington has released the full-length album We Swim In Seas That Never Rest (2016), the EP In Between (2018), and a growing catalog of independent singles.

James Collington began writing music in 2009 and produced his first demos in 2010, which featured an acoustic-driven sound. He soon began performing live and independently producing his own music. In the summer of 2015, Collington had the opportunity to open for Aaron Gillespie (known for his work with Underoath and The Almost). Impressed by his songwriting, Gillespie invited Collington to record together. The result was the debut album We Swim In Seas That Never Rest, which premiered on Relevant magazine before its release on January 1, 2016. Over the years, Collington has also shared the stage with artists including Switchfoot, Johnnyswim, and Skillet.

For the EP In Between, Collington collaborated with producer Eric Owyoung, known for his work with Switchfoot, Jon Foreman, and Hillsong UNITED. Released in 2018, the project received attention in both the United States and the United Kingdom, with several songs featured on official Spotify playlists. The lead single, "Here We Go," also earned placement on an official Spotify playlist, while "Mountain" was recorded with Dan Knittel at Anthemic Recordings.

In 2020, Collington self-produced a series of singles while staying at an Airbnb in Maine. One of those releases, "Against the Wall," became the band's first song to receive major U.S. radio airplay after winning RadioU's Battle of the Buzz. Another single, "Providence," featured James' wife, Megan. In 2022, Collington collaborated with producer Jake Rye, known for his work with Sanctus Real, on additional singles, and RadioU highlighted the band as its first featured new release of 2023.

Building on that momentum, Collington continued releasing new music with singles including "Close to Me" (2023), "Talk About It," "In the Fire," and "Do You Really Love Me" (2024). In 2026, the band remained especially active, releasing the singles "Waiting for Daylight (ARRÊT)" and "Coastal Curse / Time Won't Save Us," followed by the Black Dog EP. Throughout these releases, Collington has continued blending thoughtful lyrics, alternative rock, and faith-centered themes while reaching a growing audience through streaming platforms and Christian radio.

Collington has received growing recognition within the Christian music community. The band was nominated for the We Love Christian Music Awards' Next Big Thing category in 2020 and went on to win the award. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Collington performed live at the awards ceremony in Memphis, Tennessee, where the band accepted the honor on February 24, 2021.

James Collington was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and earned a degree in Business Management from Rhode Island College, where he met his wife, Megan. He later relocated to California and is now based in the San Luis Obispo area on California's Central Coast. In addition to his music career, Collington has served in church creative arts ministry, combining his passion for worship, songwriting, and local church leadership.
