The Choir Biography

The Choir, originally known as The Youth Choir, is an atmospheric alternative Christian rock band. They are fronted by Derri Daugherty on guitar and vocals, with Steve Hindalong on drums and as the primary lyricist, alongside Dan Michaels on lyricon, electric flute, and saxophone.

Formed in Southern California's Calvary Chapel Christian punk and alternative music scene during the early 1980s by Derri Daugherty and Steve Hindalong, they relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in the 1990s. While the lineup has shifted over the years, Derri and Steve have remained constants. Past members include guitarist Marc Byrd and bassists Michael Sauerbrey, Robin Spurs, Bill Batstone, and the late Tim Chandler (d. 2018).

Beyond their work with The Choir, the band members are involved in various musical projects. Hindalong produced four acclaimed City On A Hill albums and co-wrote the popular song “God of Wonders” with Marc Byrd. Daugherty co-founded the Christian alternative-pop supergroup The Lost Dogs in 1991, with Hindalong joining in 2006. Tim Chandler played bass for Daniel Amos and The Swirling Eddies, while Marc Byrd collaborated with his wife Christine Glass in Glassbyrd and currently performs in the post-rock duo Hammock.

The Choir boasts a rich discography spanning several decades, featuring 19 full-length studio albums. Some of their most acclaimed works include “Diamonds and Rain” (1986), “Chase the Kangaroo” (1988), and “Flap Your Wings” (2000). Recent releases include fan-funded albums like “Shadow Weaver” (2014), “Bloodshot” (2018), and “Deep Cuts” (2021), with several earlier albums remastered and re-released. Their discography also includes EPs such as “Peace, Love & Light” (2013), live albums like “Live and on the Wing in Music City” (2014), and compilation albums. As of 2024, many of their projects have been funded through Kickstarter and PledgeMusic. Read more on Last.fm.
