The Violet Burning Biography
The Violet Burning is an independent American Christian alternative rock band, affectionately known as The Violets. Formed in 1989 in Orange County, California, and later based in Boston, Massachusetts, the band has been led by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Michael J. Pritzl. Since their debut album Chosen (1989), The Violet Burning has undergone numerous lineup changes, with Pritzl remaining the constant creative force. The band’s music is characterized by its powerful guitar-driven rock sound, blending alternative rock, dream pop, and shoegaze, with spiritually themed lyrics that have earned them a dedicated fan base across North America and Europe.
Throughout their career, The Violet Burning has released over 21 albums, EPs, and live recordings, including notable works such as Strength (1992), ranked No. 69 on HM Magazine’s Top 100 Christian Rock Albums of All Time list in 2010, and Demonstrates Plastic and Elastic (1998), one of their most popular albums. Their discography showcases a commitment to exploring deeper spiritual themes through poetic, unrepetitive lyrics and innovative song structures, distinguishing them within the Christian music scene.
In addition to Pritzl, the band’s lineup has featured talented musicians like drummer Lenny Beh, guitarist Chris Buelow, bassist Kevin Buelt, and others, including Jeff Schroeder (who contributed to The Story of Our Lives in 2011 and later joined The Smashing Pumpkins) and Andrew Prickett (ex-Prayer Chain).
