TobyMac Biography

Who is TobyMac?

TobyMac (stylized tobyMac or TOBYMAC) is an American Christian recording artist, rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer. He was born Kevin Michael McKeehan on October 22, 1964, in Fairfax, Virginia.

He first rose to prominence as a member of the influential Christian trio dc Talk alongside Michael Tait and Kevin Max. Formed in the late 1980s, dc Talk became one of the most successful and groundbreaking acts in contemporary Christian music throughout the 1990s, helping expand the genre’s reach by blending hip hop, rock, and pop. Their 1995 album Jesus Freak became a defining release, going double platinum and marking a major crossover moment for Christian music. Their 1998 album Supernatural debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 100,000 copies in its first week, before the group went on hiatus around 2000.

After dc Talk, TobyMac launched a solo career that continued to shape contemporary Christian music with a genre-blending mix of hip hop, pop, rock, and electronic influences. His touring collective, Diverse City, became a key part of his identity, known for its collaborative lineup and high-energy performances.

His debut solo album Momentum (2001) introduced his new direction, followed by Welcome to Diverse City (2004), which expanded his collaborative approach and explored themes of unity and culture. He continued with Portable Sounds (2007) and Tonight (2010), both strengthening his presence as one of Christian music’s most recognizable voices.

His 2012 album Eye on It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming one of the few Christian albums to reach the top of the chart, and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. He followed with This Is Not a Test (2015), which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and also received a Grammy Award.

In 2018, he released The Elements, continuing his blend of hip hop, pop, and electronic influences with songs including I Just Need U.

In 2019, TobyMac experienced a profound personal loss with the passing of his son, Truett McKeehan, an event that deeply shaped his later music. This season of grief and faith became central to his 2022 album Life After Death, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Christian Albums chart. The album featured the hit single Help Is On the Way (Maybe Midnight), which peaked at No. 3 on the Hot Christian Songs chart and also reached No. 1 across multiple Billboard Christian airplay charts.

He continued with Heaven on My Mind (2025), which became his seventh No. 1 album on the Top Christian Albums chart. Over his career, TobyMac has also become known for signature songs such as Made to Love, Lose My Soul, City on Our Knees, Speak Life, and I Just Need U, and has earned multiple Grammy and Dove Awards.

Today, TobyMac remains one of the most influential and enduring voices in contemporary Christian music, continuing to tour widely and release music that blends faith, hope, and a distinctive genre-crossing sound.
