This is the Book of Malachi.

Malachi prophesied about a century after the Jewish exiles returned from Babylon. Though the Temple had been rebuilt, the great promises of restoration had not yet been fulfilled. As disappointment gave way to spiritual apathy, the people once again drifted into unfaithfulness, injustice, and empty worship.

The central theme of Malachi is that God desires faithful hearts, not merely outward religion. Through a series of six conversations between God and His people, Malachi exposes their hard hearts and calls them back to wholehearted covenant faithfulness.

God reminds His people of His faithful love, yet they question whether He truly cares for them. He confronts the priests for accepting blemished sacrifices, rebukes the people for betraying both their marriage vows and their covenant with God, and challenges them to honor Him with sincere worship and generosity. Again and again, the people question God's accusations, and God faithfully reveals the true condition of their hearts.

Not everyone had abandoned the Lord. Malachi highlights a faithful remnant who continued encouraging one another to honor God, and He promises that they will be remembered when the Day of the Lord comes.

When the people ask, "Where is the God of justice?" God promises to send a messenger to prepare the way before He comes to purify His people, removing evil so that true worship may be restored.

The book closes by looking ahead to the coming Day of the Lord. For those who reject God, it will bring judgment. But for those who fear His name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. Malachi ends by calling God's people to remember the Law of Moses while looking forward to the coming of a prophet like Elijah, who will prepare the way for the Lord.

Malachi reminds us that the entire Old Testament points forward with hope. God had not abandoned His promises. He would send His messenger, confront evil, restore His people, and bring His healing justice to the world.
