This is Matthew Part 1, covering chapters 1 through 13.

After centuries of waiting, the New Testament opens with the arrival of Jesus Christ. Matthew introduces Him as the promised Messiah, the descendant of Abraham and King David, who fulfills God's promises throughout the Old Testament.

The central theme of this section is the arrival of God's Kingdom. Through Jesus, God begins fulfilling His long-awaited plan to restore His people and establish His righteous reign.

Matthew begins with Jesus' birth and genealogy, showing that He is the promised King. After His baptism and temptation in the wilderness, Jesus begins proclaiming, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." Throughout these opening chapters, Matthew presents Jesus as a new and greater Moses, the authoritative teacher who fulfills everything God's Law and promises were pointing toward.

Jesus calls His first disciples and travels throughout Galilee teaching, preaching, healing the sick, and demonstrating God's authority. In the Sermon on the Mount, He explains what life in God's Kingdom looks like, calling His followers to a deeper righteousness that flows from transformed hearts rather than outward appearances alone.

As Jesus performs miracles, calms storms, forgives sins, and casts out demons, He reveals His authority over creation, sickness, evil, and even sin itself. Many ordinary people respond with faith and follow Him, while many religious leaders increasingly question His authority and reject His message.

Jesus often teaches through parables, revealing both the surprising growth of God's Kingdom and the different ways people respond to it. Those willing to hear discover its truth, while others remain spiritually blind.

Matthew reveals that Jesus is the promised King Israel has been waiting for, yet His Kingdom arrives in unexpected ways. Rather than advancing through political power or military strength, it begins by transforming hearts and calling people to follow Him.

Through Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven has drawn near and begun to break into the world, but each person must decide how they will respond to its King.
