Hopeful. Biography
Who is Hopeful.?
Hopeful. is a Christian indie rock band from Oceanside, California, blending alternative rock and pop music centered on hope in Jesus Christ. Formed in 2020 by Randy James and Hunter Jackson during the COVID-19 pandemic, the band began as a response to anxiety, fear, and cultural uncertainty, carrying a mission summarized in its slogan, "kicking hopelessness in the teeth," emphasizing that true hope is found through faith in Jesus Christ.
The band's lineup includes Randy James on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Hunter Jackson on lead guitar, Eddie Buelna on bass, James Barragan on drums, and Rafael Bastos on rhythm guitar. Shaped by both church culture and the Southern California surf and skate scene, the band brings a "toes in the sand" style anthemic indie rock sound to the Christian music scene. Randy James was raised in a Christian home but also grew up around a musical legacy on his biological father's side, with family members associated with Canned Heat, The Monkees, and The Ventures. Although music was part of his background, James did not pursue it professionally early in life. After committing his life to Christ at age 17, he spent time in Brazil, where he met his future wife, Tasia.
Hopeful. began releasing music in 2020 with the 5 song EP When the Turbulence Hits. The band later released the 6 song EP Wild One, which includes Sticks and Stones and the title track Wild One. Speaking about Wild One, Randy James described the song as encouragement to others and a reminder to himself, saying it reflects the message that believers are not alone even when facing fear or uncertainty. He described the song as "a loving reminder from the Father that He's got you… no matter how high up you are and how afraid of heights you are, He's got you. You don't have to worry." The track features background vocals from Carly Ann Taylor, James's half sister.
The band's single Everything Is Better was co-written by Randy James, Scott Mills of Colony House, and Josh Farro, and was produced by Scott Mills. The song received radio support in the United States and reflects a more pop influenced sound while retaining the band's rock foundation. Producer Gable Price has been a key creative collaborator in shaping the sound of the band's first two EPs.
As of recent reporting, Hopeful. has surpassed 150,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with strong audience engagement in the United States and Brazil. The band has completed its first full length album, tentatively titled *The Art of Letting Go*, scheduled for release in 2026. The 12 track album includes Wild One and Everything Is Better along with 10 new songs and explores themes of surrender, trust in God, and spiritual growth during seasons of difficulty.
