Luminate Biography

Who is Luminate?

Luminate is a Christian rock band formed in 2005 in Tyler, TX, that built its following by touring camps, churches, festivals, and venues across the United States. Fronted by Samuel Hancock, alongside Cody Clark, Dustin DeLong, Dusty Jakubik, and Aaron Mathew, the band developed a tight musical and personal bond through years on the road.

Hancock, who grew up in Washington, Indiana, began leading worship at his church at age 14. After high school, he enrolled at the Visible School of Music in Memphis, where he met bassist Dusty Jakubik. Jakubik, impressed by Hancock's songwriting, consulted his friend and guitarist Cody Clark, both from Tyler, TX, and the three began building the band together. With the addition of keyboardist Dustin DeLong and drummer Aaron Mathew, who had previously performed with By the Tree and Kari Jobe, Luminate was complete.

Before signing with Sparrow Records in March 2009, Luminate released several independent projects, including the EP Luminate (2006), the EP Bright and Beautiful (2007), and the EP Miracle (2008). The band made their first public appearance at Cornerstone Festival in 2006, and met a Sparrow A&R representative at the same festival in 2007. A further self-titled EP was released under Sparrow in 2010.

Their first major-label full-length album, Come Home (2011), produced by Ed Cash, Paul Moak, and Ben Glover, introduced listeners to emotionally driven rock songs paired with faith-centered lyrics. The album was nominated for Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year at the Dove Awards. In 2012, Welcome to Daylight followed, featuring the popular single "Banner of Love" and emphasizing themes of hope, redemption, and new life in Christ.

Though their national run was relatively brief, Luminate left a meaningful mark on early-2010s contemporary Christian rock through heartfelt songwriting and a clear spiritual focus. The band is currently considered inactive, with public activity effectively ending around 2016, though no official breakup announcement was made.
