Acts Part 1 Bible Overview

This is Acts Part 1, covering chapters 1 through 12.

Acts continues the story that began in the Gospel of Luke. Luke's Gospel told what Jesus began to do and teach, while Acts tells what the risen Jesus continues to do through the Holy Spirit and His followers.

The central theme of this section is that Jesus is leading His people by the Spirit to carry the good news of His Kingdom into the world. The message begins in Jerusalem, then spreads into Judea and Samaria, moving toward Jesus' promise that His followers will be witnesses to the ends of the earth.

The book opens with the risen Jesus teaching His disciples about God's Kingdom. He tells them to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit comes, giving them power for the mission ahead. Jesus then ascends to heaven, revealing that He now reigns as the exalted King who will one day return.

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus' followers with wind and fire, and people from many nations hear them proclaiming God's mighty works in their own languages. Peter announces that Jesus, who was crucified, has been raised from the dead and exalted as Lord and Messiah. Thousands respond with repentance and faith.

The early church becomes a new kind of community. God's presence now dwells among His people, who devote themselves to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, prayer, generosity, worship, and care for the poor. They gather in the temple courts and in homes as a living witness to God's healing and generous presence.

Yet the movement quickly faces opposition from Jerusalem's leaders. Peter and John are arrested for healing and teaching in Jesus' name, but they boldly declare that salvation is found in no one else. As the community grows, new servant leaders are appointed, including Stephen.

Stephen becomes a bold witness for Jesus, but he is arrested and accused of speaking against the temple. In his final speech, he shows how Israel's leaders have repeatedly resisted God's messengers. His death becomes the first major act of persecution against the church.

But persecution does not stop the mission. Instead, it scatters Jesus' followers beyond Jerusalem, carrying the gospel into Judea and Samaria. Philip brings the good news to Samaritans and to an Ethiopian official, demonstrating that the message is already crossing ethnic, social, and geographic boundaries.

Acts then tells the dramatic story of Saul of Tarsus, a fierce persecutor of the church who encounters the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus. Blinded and humbled, Saul is called to become a witness for Jesus, carrying His name to Israel, to kings, and to the nations.

The story also turns to Peter, who is led by the Spirit to the home of Cornelius, a Roman soldier. There Peter learns that God does not treat Gentiles as unclean or unworthy of joining Jesus' family. When Cornelius and his household receive the Holy Spirit, the church recognizes that God is welcoming people from every nation.

These themes come together in Antioch, where Jewish and Gentile believers form a growing, multi-ethnic church. It is there that Jesus' followers are first called Christians.

Acts Part 1 closes with King Herod killing James and imprisoning Peter. But God rescues Peter, Herod's power comes to nothing, and the word of God continues to grow and spread.
