This is John Part 1, covering chapters 1 through 12.

John opens by presenting Jesus as the eternal Word of God, who was with God in the beginning and who is Himself God. The Word became human in Jesus and came to live among us, showing God's glory, grace, and truth.

The central theme of this section is that Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God, who gives eternal life to all who believe in Him. John writes so that readers may recognize who Jesus truly is and receive life in His name.

The opening chapter introduces Jesus through a series of powerful titles. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the Messiah, the Son of God, and the King of Israel. John presents Jesus as fully human, yet also as the divine Son who makes the Father known.

As Jesus begins His public ministry, He performs signs that display His identity and call people to respond. These signs are not merely displays of power. They show who Jesus is and how Israel's Scriptures, temple, feasts, and hopes find their fulfillment in Him.

At a wedding in Cana, Jesus turns water into wine, displaying the joy and abundance of God's Kingdom. In Jerusalem, He confronts corruption in the temple and speaks of His own body as the true meeting place between God and humanity. In His conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus teaches that people need more than religious knowledge. They need a new beginning from God, new life, and His saving love.

Jesus then speaks with a Samaritan woman at a well, offering living water that becomes a source of eternal life. Throughout the following chapters, Jesus continues using images from Israel's worship and festivals to show who He is. He is the true bread from heaven, the light of the world, and the source of living water. He gives sight to the blind, life to the dying, and eternal life to those who believe.

Yet as Jesus' signs and claims become clearer, the opposition grows stronger. Some believe and follow Him, while others are offended by His words. Many religious leaders reject Him because He claims a unique unity with the Father.

The first half of John reaches a turning point when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. This sign points to Jesus as the resurrection and the life, but it also leads the leaders to plot His death. Jesus gives life to His friend, knowing it will cost Him His own.
