This is the Letters of 1, 2, and 3 John.

The letters of John were written to followers of Jesus facing confusion, division, and false teaching. Some people had left the church communities and no longer acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God. These letters call believers back to the center of Christian life: trusting Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God who truly came in human flesh, walking in God's light, loving one another, and holding together love and truth.

The central theme of 1-3 John is love and truth. John shows that real faith in Jesus cannot be separated from love for others, and real love cannot be separated from the truth about who Jesus is.

First John is written more like a poetic sermon than a typical letter. John does not move in a straight line from one topic to the next. Instead, he circles around a few core ideas again and again, especially that God is light and God is love.

John begins by pointing to Jesus as the Word of life, the One he and the other eyewitnesses had seen, heard, and touched. John wants his readers to know that the message about Jesus is not just a spiritual idea. Jesus truly came in human flesh, and through Him people can share life with God.

John then uses the image of light and darkness. God is light, and there is no darkness in Him. To walk in the light means living honestly before God, receiving forgiveness through Jesus, and refusing to pretend that sin does not matter. John is clear that followers of Jesus still need God's mercy, but they must not make peace with darkness.

John also warns against deceivers who denied the truth about Jesus. They claimed to speak for God, but rejected Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God. John says to test such claims by whether they acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God who truly came in human flesh. The truth about Jesus matters because God's love is revealed through Him.

At the heart of 1 John is the call to love one another. Love is not just a feeling or a religious word. God showed love by sending His Son to give His life for us. So those who have received God's love must love others in practical ways. John says people cannot claim to love God while hating their brothers and sisters.

John does not write these things to crush believers with fear. He writes so they can know they have eternal life. Their confidence rests in Jesus, not in pretending to be perfect. As they trust Him, receive His mercy, and love one another, they can have assurance that they belong to God. First John closes with a final warning to keep away from idols, meaning anything that would replace the true God revealed in Jesus.

Second John applies these same themes in a shorter letter. John writes to a local church, warning them to continue walking in love while refusing to support teachers who distort the truth about Jesus.

Third John shows the same issue from another angle. John praises Gaius for welcoming faithful Christian messengers, but rebukes Diotrephes, a proud leader who rejects John's authority and mistreats other believers. The letter shows that truth and love must become visible in humility, hospitality, and care for God's people.

Together, the letters of John call followers of Jesus to stay true to who Jesus is and to love one another in practical ways.
