This is the Book of Esther.

Many of God's people are still living throughout the Persian Empire after the exile. Although some have returned to Jerusalem, Esther tells the story of those who remained behind and how God protected them while they lived far from home.

The central theme of Esther is God's faithful providence. Even when He seems absent or hidden, God is quietly working through ordinary people and unexpected events to accomplish His purposes.

The story begins when Esther, a young Jewish woman, becomes queen of Persia. Her cousin Mordecai uncovers a plot against the king, while an influential official named Haman rises to power and schemes to destroy the Jewish people throughout the empire.

When the danger becomes clear, Mordecai urges Esther to act. He is confident that deliverance will come for God's people, even if Esther remains silent, and challenges her to consider whether she has become queen for this very moment. At great personal risk, Esther approaches the king, saying, "If I perish, I perish."

Then, in a series of unexpected reversals, Haman's plot is exposed, Mordecai is honored, and the Jewish people are delivered from destruction. These events are remembered through the annual Feast of Purim, celebrating God's preservation of His people from generation to generation.

One of Esther's most remarkable features is that God's name is not mentioned explicitly in the book. Yet His guidance is evident throughout the story, as countless ordinary events come together at exactly the right time. What appears to be coincidence becomes a testimony to God's unseen providence.

Esther reminds us that God is always at work, even when His presence seems hidden. He remains faithful to His covenant people and invites them to participate courageously in His purposes, even when they cannot see everything He is doing.
